    More cognative raves
As you can probably tell from the date on this post, work life balance got worse.

Now rising to the defense of my employer to restore our reputation at an upcoming public hearing. All management is breathing down my team's collective throats. Great...

On top of that, the programs I do like (HIV-related) are picking up steam.

Oh, did I mention that someone in the RY office refused to accept a project so it's mine as well, now? Lovely. I'm now in charge of VIOXX. Again.

Skiing? Hmmm.... those were the days. But I'm probably too fat to go skiing or boarding these days. Need to diet.

Perhaps I'll lose weight when I go vegetarian. Thanks, Grandma, for the idea.

    Still awaiting midlife crisis.

I think it's coming in the form of wanting kids. Mental note: find surrogate mother.

On the lighterside, spent time reading an Atlantis story by jmtorres last night. It was rough at various places, but overall quite nice.

Need to get glasses this weekend. Current pair is dying quickly

    I'm back
Apologies. I've been too busy both with work and life to make entries recently. Cleared off some time to take care of that today. Switched work projects today to something I have much more passion for, developing drugs against AIDS. New team, new players. Should be a lot of fun. Also taking my former project to it's conclusion sometime early next year.

Work life balance is all off. Sucks.

I want to go skiing. Problem is that my partner is more into luxury recreation, not sports. I'll see if I can entice him to become a ski lodge bunny.

Turning 40 later this year. Awaiting mid-life crisis.

Saw my brother this weekend. He asked why I suddenly have all this silver hair. It was on the tip of my tongue to comment that at least I had my hair, silver or not.

Installed chinese entry software for mom. Both handwriting recognition and voice recognition. She didn't like the handwriting software until the voice software wouldn't recognize her dialect. LOL.

Enough stream of consciousness. More cogent raves down the line.

    Love.

Spoke with my friend Dave in NH today. One of the topics we discussed was the film Hero. I found the film very moving, with a characteristically asian spin to the concept of heroism. Sino-heroism shares with its global counterparts the principle that the greater good is more important than individual survival or self-interest. The difference lies in how one conceives of the greater good, and how one goes about respecting it. Western cultures tend to enshrine those who fight the good battle, for the good cause. In the film Hero, the protagonist comes to the realization or revelation that only one man is strong enough to bring an end to the disputes of the warring nations, that only one man can unify China under his rule. Understanding this, and sharing the vision of unified rule for "all under heaven," which the movie loosely translated into "our country," the only course of action for the Hero is to surrender to his fate, and allow the future emperor to live, even though this means the Hero himself will be executed. Surrender for the greater good, to not press a winning position, these are concepts I haven't run across much in western culture, and that carry for me a distinctly chinese flavor. Ultimately, by ceding the future to the first emperor, the Hero has consigned his people to a less "glorious place" in history. He and his people will be one of the "defeated" peoples in China's history. The recognition that this is a better course for "all under heaven" than continued warfare between the states of China is what really make the film's protagonist a Hero.

    HASH(0x8b07730)
You are the color red. You are the most
controversial of all the colors. You are often
easily angered, but as easily as you got
excited, you come down. When angered, do you
have the tendency to be malicious? Afterwards,
do you end up begging for forgiveness? Maybe.
But you're incredibly generous, and, odd
enough, needy. You love to hate, and
sometimes, you hate to love. This color
describes you as generally edgy. When in a bad
situation, you're pessimistic, and when you're
in a good situation, you're extremely
    optimistic. You're painfully tempermental, and
sometimes it hurts the ones you love. But with
an exciting and stimulating attitude, you enjoy
talking to people and being social. But aside
from your bold and outgoing attitude, you're
    attention-needing and attention-getting. This
color is associated with lust and desire--and
you are both lust and desirous. You're a
protective person when it comes to the people
you love. You're incredibly sharp-witted and
    powerful (not to mention intelligent!).

What color are you? (Amazingly detailed & accurate--with pics!)

    TGIF
Finally, a breather day in my calendar. Still more things to do today than I can shake a stick at, but at least I'm not tied up in meetings.

Phil is sick at home. I know I have always wanted someone to take care of at home, but I'm realizing he's raised this to an art form. It's kinda funny the way he can be playfully melodramatic about his needs. Certainly takes the edge off.

I will probably bring Bruli to the Dog Park today. It's gotten to the point that his ears perk and he races around the house as soon as he hears the words Dog Park.

More later. Time to start crossing some things off the ToDo list.

Drove to NYC yesterday after work to visit Mom. Been worried about her recently, as she slipped and fell when the building plumbing broke down a couple of days ago. I still worry, but it was very good to see her and dad.

Was past 1:30 when I got home. Stopped at 2nd avenue deli to get some stuff for Phil who's feeling under the weather. Bruli is a bright point in my life. Always ready to wag his hind quarters when I get home (even after stepping out for just one minute).

Nearly had an accident this morning driving to RY. Dozed off while driving on cruise control. Thank god I didn't hit anyone. Scared the bejezz out of me, though... No more burning the midnight oil.

    Update
Time to go home to my honey's Rosh Hashanah dinner. I think we're having rib roast. Been thinking of going vegetarian on my fortieth birthday for both philosophical and health reasons. If I do, I will miss the taste of meat.

Tomorrow starts with an 8 am teleconference. UGH.

    Just another day at work
Work is busier than usual, and unfortunately more stressful as well.

I'm pissed that Nicomis was booted from BB5. She was the only one I kept watching the show for. Now that it's clear that a twit will win the half million dollars, I've lost interest in the show.

Phil was entertaining some neighbors yesterday, and afterwards, we went over to one neighbor's house. It's interesting to see how other people approach decorating. Scary, sometimes, but interesting. I had a blast playing with their 14 month old baby Max. Max developed a fondness for me that was very touching (and flattering). Somehow, I think I committed to sponsoring him through a medical eduction. Oh well.

    Nothing much happening right now
Being productive here at work, so I'm in a good mood. Taking a coffee break, so I installed the client here in the office. I'm liking what I'm seeing, so I took the plunge and became a paid member.

    First journal entry
First LJ entry here. New at blogging and all that. Installed the Visions client without a hitch. Client looks good. Will be interesting to look back at this blog over time. Also looking forward to joining the online community. More thoughts later.
